Celebrity Style Watch: Lizzy Kaplan

By Silhouettes1 · September 21, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

My Netflix watching continues unabated, and another show I love is Party Down (seriously. It’s hilarious.) Lizzy Kaplan plays one of the main characters at the catering business that the show is named for. I’ve been checking out Lizzy’s style—that girl changes her hair more than she changes her clothes, I think—but I found a few looks that are worth commenting on.

Here’s Lizzy at the premiere of Pineapple Express in 2008. I guess dressing up for premieres (especially for stoner movies) is optional; Lizzy chose a pair of capris and a flowing tank shirt. While there’s nothing wrong with this look, it seems an oddly casual choice for the red carpet.

Here she is again looking casual (but less so) in a beach-y maxi dress at the People’s Choice Awards. I love the look, but it does appear that she just walked off the beach and threw this on.

And here she is (left), looking more premiere-worthy, in a white cocktail dress at the premiere of Cloverfield. I like the simplicity of this dress, and she looks good in it, but there’s nothing particularly special or knock-out about it.

Favorite Blogs

One year ago I discovered the world of plus size fashion blogging, and I can easily say that my life changed forever. While I may have been incredibly late to the game, it's always better to be (fashionably) late than never, and I guarantee that there is still time to hop on board if it's something you are interested in!

“Just like how Courtney Love once said that every girl should pick up a guitar and start screaming, every fat girl should grab a camera and start a fashion blog.”

(I once read this quote on tumblr, and unfortunately I cannot remember who said it or the exact phrasing, but I still think it's worth mentioning...)

Now, I know that I've talked about steps to take when starting your own fashion blog, but this time I'd like to share a list of my absolute favorite bloggers. Each one of these women have a unique perspective on fashion, blogging, their bodies, and most importantly, how they navigate the world with a body-type that is hardly celebrated in our culture.

Nicolette Mason

Nicolette Mason has a very special place in my heart. She is smart as a whip, totally stunning and understands all things design better than anyone else I know. When I first saw Nicolette's blog, I was blown away. While she is a lover of all things glitz and feminine, her appreciation for the serious things in life provides both eye candy and majorly thought provoking content. Following Nicolette from a movie with friends to a rooftop photo shoot to her coverage of NY Fashion Week one really gets the feeling that this woman is on her way to taking over New York City. And then some.

Fat Aus

Bronny of Fat Aus started her blog only one year ago, but has quickly become one of the brightest stars in plus size blogging. Her style is eclectic and fun, but always seems to be cohesive with her delightful personality. What makes it a truly fun read are all of Bronny's non-fashion related posts. Riot Grrl, Pizza, Cats (Zigmond!) and wishlists galore blend perfectly with Bronny's outfit posts. It's not just about fashion, it's about what inspires us to make our clothing choices in the first place!

What Gisela Wore

Gisela Ramirez is a budding plus size fashion designer who also happens to have wonderful style of her own (I don't know if I could trust a designer with bad style). It's really special to see a plus size woman designing clothing for other plus size women. We do know what we want, after all. I have been following her blog since before her line launched, and I have to say, I am blown away by how successful she has become in the past year. Really exciting things are happening to this lady, so be sure to keep your eyes on her!

Frantic Dreams

Franceta Johnson is another one of those bloggers who is as smart as they are stylish. While Franceta may be the youngest of this bunch of bloggers, her wisdom, wit, and confidence is unparalleled. Another special feature of Frantic Dreams are Franceta's tutorial updates. Many of her style posts feature something that she's made or altered, and they all look so so good, and many times she will also do a how-to post, which is such a treat.

These are just a few of my favorite blogs, but I hope you check them out and enjoy them as much as I do!

Celebrity Fashion Fail!

By Silhouettes1 · September 14, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

I am all about great fashion and checking out celebrity style…but sometimes even the stars fail miserably (as do we all). Here are some celebrity fashion fails that I’ve found recently:

My friend said that in this pic, Rihanna looks like a muppet. The green feathery top is completely wrong on so many levels. Ugly and unflattering. She looks pregnant, and she’s not. Plus the matchy green top and pants are just too much.

Well, Kim Kardashian chose an interesting ensemble to wear to the launch of her new fragrance. Purple and orange? GAH. But that’s not the worst of it. Everything seems to fit poorly, the top is unflattering.... I believe that this is what’s known as a hot mess.

And here is celebrity Charlotte Ross at the recent premiere of the movie “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.” Good lord, what was she thinking? Crazy pattern? Yep. Fringe? Yep. This dress has all the elements of a major fail.

Seen any good fashion fails lately?

On Rosanne and Fabulous Sitcom Style

By Silhouettes1 · September 12, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

For better or worse, Netflix Instant Watch has completely changed my life. Before this year, I was perfectly fine having not seen every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Married with Children. But now, thanks to my overwhelming desire to gobble up as much of the popular culture that I was too young to appreciate, I can say that I am nearly an expert on all things network T.V.

My quest to become the reigning champ of early 90s television led me to watching the show I hated most as a young television addict-- Roseanne. I'm not entirely sure why I hated Roseanne so much, but seeing that atrocious crocheted blanket hanging on the back of an even more hideous brown couch sent rageful shivers down my adolescent spine.

Now, as a slightly less adolescent television addict, Roseanne has opened my eyes to the possibilities of what great television can accomplish. The stories are simple enough to wrap up in 22 minutes, but are so honest and caring in it's representation of everything from family to body image.

Growing up, we've all been told that women like Roseanne, who were loud, outspoken, and most of all, large were everything that we should avoid becoming. We've always loved to criticize the Rosie O'Donnells and Whoopi Goldbergs of the world, and if they are ever present on television, they are filling the role of angry women who cannot be tamed. How dare they speak their minds, love their bodies, and embrace their femininity in front of our precious eyes!

As Roseanne and I were becoming close, the rest of the world was introduced to a group of new ladies who aren't apologizing for their bodies.

TLCs new show, Big Sexy, seems to be part Jersey Shore and part Sex and The City, but with a plus sized twist. These women are having a lot of fun and showing that size shouldn't dictate how you live your life. And I really appreciate that. But, I am nervous about a television show that focuses so much on the size of it's subjects instead of... well... everything else. I doubt a show like Roseanne could ever exist and have the success it had in our current culture. But shows like Big Sexy and Mike and Molly seem so radically on the other side of the spectrum that I have to wonder if we will ever find a balance.

That being said, I do love reality television for all of it's tacky fun, and I LOVE these ladies and their fabulous style. So, maybe I'll just set down my critic hat and appreciate that there are some seriously lovely, fun and entertaining plus size ladies gracing my television once a week.

Big Sexy airs on TLC. Check your local listings for air times.

Celebrity Style Watch: Jessica Chastain

By Silhouettes1 · September 9, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Jessica Chastain’s name is suddenly showing up everywhere! She’s been in several movies this year already, strutting her stuff on the red carpet. We’ve already talked about her fantastic purple dress at the premiere of The Help.

Here she is at the premiere of her most recent movie, The Debt, in a simple white dress that still looks fabulous.

And here she is at Cannes for the premiere of Tree of Life, with Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. I love this yellow dress, and despite the fact that yellow doesn’t always work with pale skin, it’s just the right tone for her.

She chose green for “The Tree of Life” premiere in L.A. Not sure how I feel about the mustard accent, but this is, overall, another winning color and style choice.
