Coat Watch 2011

By Silhouettes1 · September 7, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

No one’s ready to think about coats yet, but fall is on the way… and that means that you’re going to need something to keep you warm.

Here are some fall-style plus-size jackets that, while they won’t work in the middle of January, will still keep you warm through the fall.

A swing coat is one option. Loose-fitting and flowing, a swing coat is a warm layer that looks super stylish. This shorter-style swing jacket is a nice transitional piece from fall to winter. It goes well with any professional outfit or nice jeans.

Another idea is a corduroy shirt jacket. Pull this on for any casual day or weekend wear. The corduroy is comfortable and stylish, and the accents add a fun flair.

Stay tuned for a post later in the fall when we’ll discuss the best winter coat options.

New Bags for Fall

By Silhouettes1 · September 7, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

With the change of seasons comes a good time to transition not just your wardrobe, but also some of your accessories—like your bags. Summer beach bags and sandals go into the closet until next year, and out come the neutral and colorful bags to take you through the colder months of the year.

A hobo bag like this one is a good option. Simple, classic, goes with everything. It’s got a shoulder strap or a handle, depending on what works for you (and of course, you can switch it up).

Another idea is a bucket bag like this one. It holds everything, thanks to some expandable side slits, but it isn’t huge or cumbersome to carry.

And you can add some bling to your wardrobe with a rhinestone bag. Faux alligator with pewter hardware, this bag has some serious flair.

What’s your favorite kind of bag to carry?

Celebrity Style Watch: Jennifer Garner

By Silhouettes1 · September 2, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

I have a girl-crush on J. Garner—she just seems so sweet and fun—and so I decided to look at some of her past style choices and see what she’s chosen for red carpet wear.

Here she is in a black strapless dress at the 2008 Oscars. I’m sort of “meh” about this one…the ruffles don’t do anything for me, the black is basic formal fare, and the strapless design is pretty standard. She does look good in it, however.

Here she is at the 2010 Golden Globes in a pretty silver dress. I like the design and texture, but the color leaves something to be desired.

I do like this rich green dress she chose for the premiere of her movie, The Invention of Lying.  She’s tall and slim enough to pull off the ruffles.

1970s Fashion Redux

By Silhouettes1 · August 31, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

I’ve written here before about the return of the 1970s in the fashion world. The NY Times recently did a piece on that very phenomenon, complete with a slideshow of the latest runway looks. I don’t know how 70s it all is (some of the women in menswear stuff looks like the 80s) but it’s definitely something different.

Here’s an example of the “menswear” look, as done by Tommy Hilfiger.

And here’s a green silk dress with bow by Marc Jacobs. I’m really hoping this look doesn’t come back. Add a permed head of hair and big glasses, and you’re talking every mom and librarian from 30 years ago.

And finally, something that really does say “1970s” …although maybe more 70s pimp than anything else. This look by Gucci includes a fox coat (purple, of course) paired with red shirt (bow, of course) and a purple skirt. Not to mention hat, sunglasses and boots.

Feel like menswear is totally 80s? Got a favorite 70s look that you want to resurrect? Tell us in the comments.

Silhouettes Does Autumn Right

By Silhouettes1 · August 29, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

As autumn draws near, most of us are getting rather excited to tweak our summer closets. Most of us aren't going to go and trash every summer item we have and replace it with all new clothing, but Silhouettes has some great pieces that can enhance your fall collections to be exciting, fresh and on trend for the new season!

The Safari Jacket

I love love love a good Safari Jacket. They can be worn everyday as a casual jacket with jeans, layer it underneath a heavier coat or leather jacket, or wear it over a softer dress to give it a bit of edge. For example, you could pair it with a dress I've mentioned at least once before:

Silhouettes Animal Print Dress ($59)

The flowy, summer friendly dress can be transformed into an excellent fall item by layering the Safari jacket, a scarf and a chunky necklace!

Animal Foil-Print Dress

Since we're on an animal print kick, let's talk about a dress that immediately caught my attention. Prints like this aren't going anywhere for a while, and Silhouettes is offering a great solution to a trend that can sometimes be hard to pull off. The Animal Foil-Print Dress is delightfully flashy without overpowering the wearer.

Polka Dot Long Sleeve Swing Shirt

Polka Dots are making a comeback in a major way. Marc Jacobs has covered nearly everything in his autumn '11 collection in em, and fortunately for us, it's an easy look to replicate. There's nothing new about dots, but sometimes it's nice to get a little reminder that they're around, and the Silhouettes Long Sleeve Swing Shirt is a great option!

The Pleated Dress

Preppy, Back-to-School chic isn't just a look for the kids. Pair it with a pair of loafers and a cardigan in the daytime or rock some heels for a great evening look. And try adding a metallic belt to give your waist some definition and flash.

Most of you probably have everything you'll need in your closets for your fall transition, but adding a few new pieces can totally transform your look for a new season!
