Red Carpet Style Watch: The Help

By Silhouettes1 · August 22, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Summer blockbuster premieres are usually a fun way to check out fashion, just because they get so much attention. But another movie, not a superhero film or an action movie, is getting a lot of buzz right now: The Help.

Based on a very popular book of the same name, this movie tells the story of African-American women (one played by Viola Davis) working as maids in pre-Civil Rights era Mississippi, and a white woman (Emma Stone) who collects their stories. The movie premiered recently in L.A.

Emma Stone (far left), chose a Chanel dress to wear on the red carpet. I’m not a fan—it looks like a t-shirt and skirt combo from back in the day. And while I recognize the problems that a baby bump brings to choosing a dress, Bryce Dallas Howard (second from left) looks like she just stepped out of Little House on the Prairie.

Much better are the choices by Viola Davis, in a stunning red gown, and Jessica Chastain, in purple. These flattering, stylish choices make both women look fantastic. (And bonus! Style guru Nate Berkus (far right) was an executive producer.)

Celebrity Style Watch: Mila Kunis

She’s come a long way from playing ditzy Jackie Burkhart on That 70s Show! Mila Kunis is now a bonafied movie star, having had roles in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Black Swan.

So what does she wear when she has to hit the red carpet or head out for a night on the town?

For red carpet wear, her color choices are fantastic. Here she is at the 2011 Golden Globes in a dark green off-the-shoulder gown with a sweeping train. I am definitely a fan.

And, at the 2011 Oscars, she chose to go purple. While the style of this dress is questionable simply because I’m afraid she’s going to fall out, she looks good and it stands out among the blacks and reds and neutrals that so many women choose.

She did, however, choose to go neutral back in 2008. Although the sequins help spice up this otherwise-plain dress.

Black dress buffet

So many choices when you’re in the market for a plus-size black dress! So you have to think about what looks good on your body, what impression you want to make, and of course, your own personal style preferences.

Some ideas:

A very flattering empire-waist dress with the illusion of a lace top. If you’re smaller on top, this dress will highlight all your best assets and skim the heavier parts—hips, thighs, etc.

Something more exciting than basic black is this foil animal print dress. Shiny, flattering and fun! (The same fabric shows up in a sleeveless boatneck.)

And if you want something that looks hot coming OR going, this dress with its softly draped neckline and the stylish back lace panel.

There was once a time when I thought that a few coats of nailpolish was no big deal and should not be given much thought. Sure, having some shade of red on your nails looks alright, but why bother? It's just going to chip anyways, right? This changed a few months ago when I was invited to a nail painting party at a girlfriend's house, where we ate dinner, gabbed, drank wine, and got super creative with our painting skills (we all went to art school together, so it's nice to see our degrees at work). There was something so delightful about taking a few hours out of my hectic schedule to just relax and do a little thing for myself. Now, every sunday night it's just me, my nails, and an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I couldn't be happier.

If you can afford it, take a couple of hours to just sit and enjoy the process of layering lacquer. It's a simple task that gives you a break from the hectic lives we all lead. And now, with fall coming there are all sorts of new nail trends to play with!

Barely There Color

Left to right: Polish by Essie, Dior, and OPI for Sephora

Nude polishes have been trendy for ages. They're perfect for any season and can add a subtle polish to your look. This season though, try venturing away from the light pinkish neutrals and play with grays, mochas, and khakis. And if you're feeling a bit glitzier, try layering a metallic glitter top coat over your neutrals. I'm particularily fond of Traffic Stopper Copper by Opi for Sephora.

Don't Toss Those Neons!

Nails by Sophy Robson

Neon half moons by yours truly.

This summer neons were HUGE. You could barely open a blog without seeing a neon green satchel or an almost painful to look at orange belt. But just because summer is on it's way house, you shouldn't have to trash your statement making hues. This fall, try using neon colors as an accent in your manicure. Pair it with a nice neutral and you've got a look that's both playful and sophisticated.

Red Red Nails

Ok so maybe I was trashing red nails earlier, but it's impossible to avoid the fact that red nails are classics for a reason. There's something so powerful about a woman who can rock a deep red nail. While candy apple reds are sweet and fun, vampy vintage reds are perfect for a fall season of climbing the corporate ladder or sipping martinis with your girlfriends.

Whatever you end up doing, remember, you can always start over! Take some time for yourself, relax, and try something that intimidates you, because who knows, you might fall in love with your digits all over again!

Celebrity Style Watch: Adele

By Silhouettes1 · August 12, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

She’s got a hot song, a best-selling album and she is only 22 years old! Not to mention that fabulous voice.  So how does Adele choose to dress herself for those nights out?

Here she is at the 2009 Grammy’s in all-black dress with a hot green coat:

And here at the 2009 VH1 Diva Awards. This style is fabulous on her, and the gold embroidery embellishments are amazing.

And here at the 2011 Brit Awards, again in black. As usual, this dress looks good, but it would be nice to see a pop of color in her wardrobe sometimes. Bring back the green coat!
