Red Carpet Style Watch: Harry Potter Premiere!

By Silhouettes · July 20, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiered in mid-July, and everyone came out for the big red carpet event. Sad to think (if you’re a fan) that this is the last new Harry Potter event ever!

Here, author JK Rowling shows off her dress for the event. While I don’t mind the floral print, I think the style of this dress does nothing for her figure, at least from the waist down. Normally high-waisted dresses are flattering, but this one is just odd.

Helena Bonham Carter was surprisingly restrained at the London premiere, but I still don’t like her choice. The dress doesn’t really seem to fit all that well, and it’s kind of boring.

And here’s Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) in a light pink dress with a top that looks more like a shirt:

All in all, I think Emma Watson wins for best dressed at the London premiere (stay tuned part 2 when we look at watch she wore).

Fall Fashion Trends: Peplum and Mustard

By Silhouettes · July 18, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Even though we’re in the middle of a hot summer, fashion has already moved on to fall and winter looks. I was just breezing through some photos of upcoming fall fashion trends, one of which is “peplum.”  I’d heard this word before, but had no idea exactly what it was…so of course I investigated!

Turns out peplum is a “short overskirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress.”

Not my favorite look, just because my hips don’t need any more ruffles or overskirts attached to them for emphasis.  But for women who are bigger on top, a peplum jacket can help balance everything out.

Mustard (the color, not the condiment) is another fall fashion look that’s hitting the runways.  Get your summer tans now…mustard is a color that works best on darker skin (too pale and it will wash you out). If you’re feeling  the mustard thing, check out something like this wrinkle-resistant plus-size shirt.  Comfortable and easy-wearing, plus it comes in a variety of colors.

If you don’t think mustard is your color, you can still work it in to your wardrobe with shoes. Shoes are great way to wear colors you like but that don’t necessarily work well with your skin tone. These cute peep-toes in mustard are both stylish looking and come in one of fall’s hottest shades!

Making Resort Wear Our Own

By Silhouettes · July 15, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

It's a fashion tradition for our favorite designers to create a more casual, relaxed collection inbetween their big fall and summer shows, geared toward the lucky men and women in the world who are planning to take gorgeous tropical vacations during the dull winter months. While I don't know about you all, the closest I'll be to a warm trip this winter is when I sit in front of a heater drinking a piña colada. It's okay though. Vacation or not, we can all take some style cues from some of the best of the new Resort 2012 collections! And the best part is, we don't have to wait for the winter.

Drench Yourself in Monochrome. Chloé's breezy, effortless ballerina style has been ruling my runway heart for a few seasons now. But this newest collections use of single color outfits makes me wonder if I could pull off the same statement! There is something so bold and daring about wearing a single color head to toe, while the mixing of textures still allows for depth in the look. Try it with any color you want!

POPS of Neon! Diane Von Furstenburg plays with extreme accents of the flourescent variety, while maintaining a relaxed silhouette. It's fun, fresh and maintains quite sophisticated. You can try this look in a number of ways, be it with a scarf, headband or a shoe. Lately, I've been rocking hot hot pink nail polish, which adds a nice surprise to my rather neutral looks.

Seeing Red. Red is one of those colors that everyone owns, but I feel like it can be daunting to wear in a new, statement making sort of way. I'm crazy about the Rebecca Minkoff shorts, and think a bright pant in any color is something we should all try more often! Sonia Rykiel gives us another take on red, and shows just how lovely a couple of stripes can be!

Sheer Madness! A recurring trend in the past few seasons has been SHEER ANYTHING! Givenchy and Stella McCartney give us another take on it, and I am absolutely in love. It's obviously not very practical, and I wouldn't suggest wearing a sheer skirt to the office, but one thing I think that could be taken away from looks like this is how many textures are being layered together. Do you have a top in your closet that's maybe a bit too transparent for your every day style? Layer it between a contrasting tank top and a cute jacket! Play around with making transparency work for you.

With all of these shows, and any other fashion event, it's important to stay true to yourself while still having fun. Inspiration comes from everywhere, so always keep your eyes open! Now go on over to the Silhouettes shop and get creative!

Red Carpet Style Watch: Transformers Premiere

By Silhouettes · July 14, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the summer, opened recently—which means a lot of explosions and a big time premiere.

Here’s Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley, who I didn’t really know much about. Turns out she’s a former Victoria’s Secret model turned actress. I do like her stunning red strapless dress.

And since premieres for these kind of movies happen everywhere, here’s Rosie on the Moscow red carpet:

While this look isn’t nearly as classic, I don’t hate it…well, I don’t really love the shorts under the sheer skirt. But I actually don’t mind the rest of it!

Royalty comes to North America

By Silhouettes · July 13, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Prince William and Kate arrived in Canada recently for a North American tour—they’ll be spending most of their time in Canada before visiting Los Angeles (their only U.S. stop). But that provides us with a great opportunity to see Kate’s fashion up close!

Kate was wearing a dress by a Canadian designer when she and William arrived on the tarmac. She looks fantastic and classy in this dark patterned sheath with matching heels and clutch.

I’m less of a fan of this dress, which she wore to a barbecue. I realize it’s supposed to be casual, but there’s something about this that just looks frumpy to me.

But there’s nothing frumpy about this outfit, which she wore earlier in the day. A very simple, classic look:
