New Year Style Watch: Military and Boyfriend

By Silhouettes · January 17, 2011 · 0 Comments · 11 Views

Styles that are showing up on the runways and in clothing stores this winter are military-inspired styling and a more androgynous look. “Androgynous” in this case means something like “neither masculine nor feminine in appearance.”

However, most women I know do want to appear feminine when they choose clothing, so one way to incorporate some of the new fashion trends into your wardrobe is to choose “boyfriend” pieces. Boyfriend is just a looser style that still shows off your feminine side.

Some examples of boyfriend styles include this cardigan, a warm and soft piece that keeps you comfortable in changing temperatures, this light v-neck tunic that’s perfect for layering, and these loose-fitting incredibly comfortable boyfriend jeans.

To incorporate a military-inspired look into your clothing options, go with something like this military sweater vest. It’s got button-trimmed lapels and cool epaulettes for that military flair.

Stylin’ Sweaters

Cardigans are the perfect layering piece—great for cool days in the spring, great to wear when the house or office is cold in the winter (or the summer), and good for fall, too.

Since cardigans are all the rage these days, they’re pretty easy to find. But here are a few specific options for different occasions.

First, this novelty stitch cardigan. This one isn’t for staying completely warm—it’s more to add some style and flair to your look. (This is also washable, which is awesome and really rare when you’re talking about a crochet-style like this.) Wear this over fitted shirts or sweaters, and pair it with jeans, pants or long skirts.

Another fun style is this bolero cardigan (bolero refers to the open-front style). Bolero-style sweaters are especially great for pairing with dresses.

And for basic warmth and style, this simple cotton v-neck cardigan is a good addition to your wardrobe and can be worn with just about anything (except maybe a formal dress). It’s especially nice with a t-shirt and jeans.

If none of those are your style, you can check out lots more plus size cardigans here.

I went shopping recently and was amazed at the huge variety of sweaters on the racks and shelves. Sweaters are the “in” thing this year for sure. Long sweaters, sweater dresses, flowing cardigans—they’re all out there and they’re all in style.

Check out these plus-size sweater ideas:

Open-front cardigan: your classic, basic long cardigan (in black or print). Wear it with jeans or pants and a fitted top. This is a perfect look for winter.

V-neck tunic: This long tunic sweater is great over leggings or jeans. It’s both stylish and cozy, great for snuggling by the fire or going out on the town.

Cascade cardigan: A lovely feminine cardigan available in a variety of fun colors. This sweater offers a twist on the basic cardigan by adding the trendy, flowing cascade style.

Knit V-neck: Another classic sweater, this can be paired with a belt or button-down for a more tailored look—or just wear it with jeans for a casual day.

Mix it Up with Cardigans

I’ve talked before about how great layering can be, especially on fall days when the temperature can change from cool to warm to cool again. Cardigans of all kinds are an awesome way to make sure you’re warm enough, indoors or out. Plus, there are tons of prints and styles to choose from, so adding a cardigan can also add spice to your wardrobe.

You can choose a chic cardigan like this to wear with business clothes or stylish jeans. Having one elegant sweater like this is great for evenings, too, just throw it on and go.

For something fun that can go from casual to fancy, check out a cascade cardigan like this one. It’s soft, flowing and feminine.

And finally, for something completely different, try this Lion Print cardigan! The cat is embellished with silver-studded eyes, nose and whiskers.

Take a Look at My Boyfriend (Clothes)

One fun trend that I’ve seen around lately is the “boyfriend” style clothes. Boyfriend clothes are the looser-fitting, comfortable pieces—like stuff you might swipe from your man when he leaves them lying around

Boyfriend-style pieces are nice for relaxing weekends, but they can be appropriate for work settings too, as long as they’re not too casual.

The boyfriend v-neck tunic is one of these adaptable pieces. It’s light cotton, so perfect even for days that are a little warm, especially if you’re spending time in air conditioning. It’s got a v-neck so you can layer it over a tank or cami. The khaki color works well with jeans, but you could also pair the other colors with khaki pants.

The boyfriend roll sleeve cardigan is another comfortable piece that’s good for layering. It’s long, with pockets to keep your hands warm or to hold your valuables. Throw it over a t-shirt or a tank top when you get chilly…it’s like a jacket, but a bit lighter and more casual.

Another boyfriend piece that’s perfect with jeans is this seersucker boyfriend jacket. It’s inspired by guys' clothing, but it’s cut and tailored for women. The light fabric makes this a wonderful summer jacket, and you can roll up the sleeves for contrast and a relaxed look.

Boyfriend clothes make a fun and comfy addition to your summer and your fall wardrobe. Keep your eyes peeled for this relaxed clothing style!

Cold on the Inside

No matter how hot it is outside, some offices keep the air conditioning at sub-arctic levels. If that’s the case where you work, you probably want to wear something a tiny bit warmer inside—and something that you can shed quickly when you walk outside.

I found some plus size coordinates recently that work really well for office layering. Like the lace trim cardigan and lace trim tank. The ribbed fit of the tank is slimming, and the length and coverage of the cardigan makes it professional enough for work. Plus it’s got a really pretty lace embellishment and a fun swing style.

The other set of coordinates is the peachskin tank and peachskin big shirt combo. The brushed and sueded soft texture makes these two pieces amazing. You can wear the tank on its own, or throw the big shirt over it (or any other shell) for a warmer feel and layered look.
